Setting YOU Up for Success

October 28th, 2011

Who’s had a baby? (raises hand) Who has had their hearts filled with joy in an instant for someone you barely know? (raises hand)  Who’s tried to breastfeed this new love of your life and quickly discover the pain, feelings of failure, confusion and frustration?  (raises hand)

Who thought breastfeeding was a no brainer? (ME!)

I talk with A LOT of moms, new moms and veterans alike and there is a common comment I hear, “Man, breastfeeding is hard!’  It’s with this common frustration that we have teamed up with Anita Froese.  Anita is a highly sought after, independent lactation consultant.  A former registered nurse and has credentials as a International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and a mother of three herself, she knows her stuff.  If you have met her it’s clear that she is passionate about breastfeeding and would like nothing more that to equip new moms with the tools to make breastfeeding a success from the START.

If you are a rookie Mom or a veteran that didn’t have a good experience with breastfeeding the first go around this class is for you.  This class is meant to give you the tools and resources to be a successful breastfeeding mama, from the START.

Invest in your sanity. The cost for this class is $30 per couple, a couple can be a husband, partner, mother or mother in law.  We suggest to bring someone that will be with you for the first couple of weeks so both of you are in the know and on the same page.

Sign me up? Please email info@nineboutique.com or call 604.859.998 to register.  This is not a drop in class, please pre-register and pay prior to class.  We ask that you give us a 24 hour cancellation notice if you would like to be refunded.

Date: Monday November 14 from 6:30 – 8pm

We ask that you bring a newborn sized doll with you if possible.  There will  be refreshments served.

All participants will receive a 10% off their purchase that evening.

Poop Happens

November 5th, 2010

The Season is upon us, whether we are ready or not!  Christmas is coming!  For most of us that means baking, shopping, Christmas tree decorating and a delicious feast with all of our loved ones.

It’s also a time to be aware of how fortunate we are able to be able to participate in these fun traditions that we look forward to every year.  This year we are launching our first annual Poop Happens Diaper Drive!  All donated diapers are being used and given to local Mom’s who have chosen life for their child however need help with the necessities.  Diapers are a big necessity and anyone who has had a child knows, they are expensive!  Especially when you are wondering where and when your next meal maybe coming from.  So this Season we are calling all Mom’s!  All Mom’s who are grateful for all they have been blessed with and want to give back.  It is a small sacrifice for most of us to buy and extra pack of diapers next time your at the grocery store but I can assure you it will make a huge impact in another Mom’s world.  Let’s group together as Mother’s and make this happen!  My goal this year is to have the entire back wall filled to the top with a wall of diapers – I know we can do it!  It was important to us to donate these diaper’s to locale mother’s in our community, so they will be going to Women’s Resource Society of the Fraser Valley.  They make an impact all year to women who belong to our community, let’s show these women how generous we are and give back.

To sweeten the deal for you, bring in a pack of diapers and receive and EXTRA 15% off your purchase in January.  Let’s do it ladies!

Best Baby Carrier. Ever.

September 8th, 2010

Beco.  Have you met Beco?  If you haven’t, let me introduce the two of you – you will surly become fast friends.  You’ll enjoy family vacations, long walks on the beach, she might even help you vacuum.

Anyone who has researched for soft baby carriers probably feels overwhelmed, tired just thinking about going through all of the MANY reviews and trying to decide which is right for you and your child.  Knowing that I wanted to carry a great baby carrier when opening the shop, I did a lot of research on which one was the best.  To the untrained eye, to most people a carrier is just that – a carrier.  It carry’s your babe, leaving you with two glorious hands free to do what you will with them.  However, to the trained eye this is just not so.  To someone who has worn a bad carrier is most likely rolling her eyes right now and has vowed that they are all the same and they ALL SUCK.  Or my favorite is, “My baby doesn’t like to be be in a carrier.”  WRONG.  Your baby has been carried by you for 10 month’s and loved every single minute.  Babies naturally want to feel and smell mom, it makes them feel safe and secure.  It’s natural for them and good for them to have human touch any chance they can get.  It has been proven that babies who are “worn” cry less and mom’s who “wear” their babes are less prone to PPD.  So there.

OK back on track.  Back to Beco.  I have listed to you the few reasons, why I think the Beco Butterfly ll is a superior carrier.  There are other’s but these 5 are my favorite.

1.  The Beco has a substantial padded hip belt.  This evenly distributes weight regardless of whether you are front or back carrier.  Whether you are carrying a infant, or a toddler you won’t feel the weight in your shoulder’s which for those of us who have used a bad carrier knows this feeling and knows it makes you uncomfortable and cranky, which in turn makes your baby cranky.

2.  Safety clasps.  All clasps on the Beco’s have a safety features so little curious finger’s can’t undo a clip and in turn fall out.  Clearly, s very important feature.  Also, each tie comes set up with a small elastic at the end so once you have adjusted it accordingly the ties can be rolled up and secured so that you don’t have long ties dangling that can be caught in something such as a door or pulled by a toddler.

3.  Inside panel, which creates a ‘pocket’.  Beco has created this very unique but important feature.  This is a panel of fabric in-between the baby and you which creates a pocket.  This pocket is beneficial because it makes it so easy to put the child in the carrier when you are by yourself, you also can then transfer the child from a front to back carry or switch partner’s even, without taking the child out.

4.  The Beco is the longest carrier on the market.  Which makes this great for any tall child or tall parent.  If you look at photo’s of other carriers, they seem to cut the child off at mid back which can be problematic when they fall asleep.  The longer ‘torso’ of the Beco prevents this from happening so quickly.

5.  The scrumptious patterns and standard organic fabric.  Do I need to say more?  I don’t think so.

Let me also remind you that Beco has just released the new Beco Gemini, which combined 4 carrier positions into one.  In a single carrier you can front face carry, face to face carry, back carry and side carry.  It has created quite a buzz and after receiving mine I can see why.

If you have any other questions regarding carrier’s or slings, please let me know!  I would love to here from you.

Beauty. Leave your Mark.

June 10th, 2010

So last week I decided to torture my husband and rent the documentary, America the Beautiful.  The man who created the film tells us in the beginning that he too was once a victim of our societies need to be the best and most beautiful.  He doesn’t go into detail, however indicates that he was at one point in love with a lovely women.  Instead of marrying her, which he now realizes he should have done, he felt he could do better and wanted someone more beautiful.  So he broke it off with his lovely girlfriend to go on the hunt for a better, more attractive mate.  To this day, he is overweight, balding and single.  His lovely ex on the other hand?  Happily married with lovely children of her own.  His ‘need’ for the ‘perfect’ women, resulted in him being alone and with no one to share his joy’s and sadness with.

We as women know that the fashion and beauty industry is skewed, yet we insist on comparing ourselves and never being happy with how we are made.  We know this already, right??  Right. There were a couple of interviews and points made me really made me stop and think.  The first was an interview with one of the creators of the very successful Vagina Monologues.  She was in Africa speaking to some women of a tribe and it came up in conversation that she was self conscious about her mid section.  The African women gave her a puzzled look.  She then asks the American women to look at a tree she is pointing at and asks, “Do you think that tree is beautiful?”  The American answers yes and the African women then points to another tree that looks very different from the first and asks the same question.  The American answers yes again, that both trees are very beautiful.  The African then says something so simple, yet it resonated with me so strongly.  She says, “So both tree’s are equally beautiful, even though they look completely different?”  Well, ya – duh.  It is so simple to take that comparison and apply it to our outlook on ourselves.  We all look different, very different.  AND THAT IS GOOD.  It’s how it is suppose to be.  We were all created in one image, however many different versions of that image.  Embrace your uniqueness, show it off how uniquely beautiful you are!

A second point also made me stop and think.  I believe it was an interview with a interview with a fashion photographer.  He was saying that his goal it to produce the perfect shot.  His job is to reach perfection through film.  However, he then goes to say that each and every shot that is published in ANY add, film, editorial etc is re-touched.  A lot.  To the point that the model wouldn’t be recognizable, if put beside the photo.  So in the film, the conclusion is made that we as women and young girls are looking at these magazines telling ourselves that we want to look like these models.  However, these models are not even real!  They themselves don’t look like that in their reality because they are re-touched to the point of being unrecognizable!

So, as women who are role models for the upcoming generations let’s get a perspective on what beauty really is.  Is beauty not having the insides of our legs not touch when we walk, or not having a single pour on our skin, or perfectly moisturized cuticles or maybe hair that shines like you’ve dunked your head in vat of olive oil?  I don’t think so.  Find beauty today.  Tell yourself, your mother, daughter, aunt, grandma and sister today that she is beautiful.  Just the way she is.

Favorite Things #2

March 25th, 2010

The list moves on with my favorite things.  Since Easter is upon us, my second favortie thing is: MINI EGGS!  It’s my all time favorite candy.  I like to let them melt in my mouth, to crush those little beauty’s up and sprinkle over ice-cream, I like them when I find a lone egg at the bottom of purse and I especially like eating them a few at time.  Remember when you were a kid and you stuffed the entire Smarties package in your mouth, like that – was I the only one who did that?   I tell you, it’s not pretty.

I must clarify, I DO NOT like the cream eggs or this whole dark chocolate mini eggs – blech!  Why change a good thing – why?

That’s it, short and sweet.  Excuse me while I go to Costco and get my week supply of mini eggs ;)

Favorite Things #1

March 16th, 2010

I am adding a section to Nine’s blog.  It’s all of my favorite things, like Oprah – without all the money.

Feel free to peruse my favorite things.  I hope I can pass along some inspiration, some funnies, some helpful hints and maybe some innovative products.

The first of my favorite things: blogs.  Google blog and you get 2,460,000,000 hits – YOWSA!  I have 5 favorites.

Here is my morning routine.  I get into work and open up shop.  I then have my trusty dark roast coffee by my side as I open up ol’ bessie.  Ol’ Bessie is my (so far) trusty MAC laptop.  I desperately need a new one because one day I’m going to push that on button and she will have passed on, it will be a sad, sad day.  If ol’ bessie was a person I would imagine here to be the old version of Rose from Titanic, so old and fragile but ‘Her Heart will Go On’.  Anyway, once me and ‘ol bessie say good morning I pursue my favorite blogster’s.  This usually takes about an hour. What? I get distracted easily.

When I was thinking about this post, I was trying to come up with one common thread that they all have in common, but I couldn’t.  They are all very different but they all either make me laugh and/or inspire me somehow.

Dooce was my first.  She swooned me over with her sarcastic, honest sense of humor.  She has written two books since I have started following her, none of which I have read yet.  I think I’m waiting till I have kids, because both are about that time in her life.  Not only do I find her hilarious but she took a really bad situation and ended up turning it into something that allowed her and her husband to quite her job and blog.  Yes, when you have McDonalds and Target advertising on your site, it’s safe to say you have made it as a professional blogger.

Next up!  The Pioneer Women.  Her blog has sections, like WalMart.  She is a city girl who fell in love with a cattle rancher and now lives in the middle of no where with her four punks, you can read about their romantic love story here.  And this girl can cook!  I love to cook myself so it’s not a mystery as to why I love her blog.  She also just released her very own cookbook, I have been wanting to get my hands on it but haven’t gotten around to it yet.  If you see it in your travels – pick me up one!  Her light hearted stories and infectious writing style will hook you, but one you make this, you will be addicted.

Jasmine Star.  She has such a beautiful spirit.  I obviously have never met the girl, but I feel like if I ran into her we would decide to grab a coffee to ‘catch up’.  She is widely successful, yet she has a realness to her.  No snooty-ness with her and I like it.  Her style of photography is gorgeous.  I don’t need to say any more about her, I will let you discover her for yourself.

The next one, please take with a grain of salt.  This one kind of leaves me speechless… what can you say about someone who  refers to her children as crotch parasites?  She makes be laugh. Even the name of her blog makes me giggle.

The last but very not least, The Satorialist.  It purely is for my own fantasy because how cool would it be to be invited to the best fashion shows, get VIP invites to the best parties, be hired by the best magazines and travel to the most glamorous cities and photograph the ridiculously chic the people who live there?  Ummmm, nothing would be better.  I know the grass is not always greener on the other side but I pretty sure for Scott Schuman it is.

So those are my top five favorite blogs – right now anyway.

Check back for more favorite things to come!
